College Counseling 101 Series Dates and Sessions Now Available!
The PNACAC Government Relations Committee advocates for the college admissions profession, high school counselors, college admissions representatives, independent educational consultants, and the students and families we work with.
The committee is grounded in core values of education, access, equity, and professionalism, in championing policies that expand access to postsecondary education and increase transparency of, and funding for, postsecondary educational and career pathways.
We are non-partisan and advocate with national, regional, state, and local elected officials to share how legislation and policies impact those we work with. Examples of issues the PNACAC Government Relations advocates for include:
Equity and access to postsecondary education
Support for school counselors; and College access and affordability.
The PNACAC Government Relations Committee empowers the PNACAC membership with tools and resources to advocate for causes that align with our organization’s mission. PNACAC members are encouraged to stay informed and take action through NACAC’s Advocacy & Policy Updates, sign up for state’s legislation alerts, and engage in these activities throughout the year:
January: check your Secretary of State’s website for important voting dates
February: meet with your members of Congress in their district offices during the President’s Day district work period and attend state-level advocacy day
March: check the Education Commission of the States’ Education Policy Tracker for your state for relevant legislation and contact your representatives to share support/concern
April: it’s the beginning of appropriations session - call your members of Congress and encourage them to support education funding
May: gather stories from graduating students who have benefited from access to affordable education to share with your members of Congress
June/July/August: most state’s legislative sessions have adjourned so you can meet with them in their local offices to discuss potential legislation for next session
September: Congress must pass appropriations bills by September 30 to fund the fiscal year so call your members to remind them to prioritize education funding
October: remind your families to complete/submit the FAFSA
November: Vote!
December: reach out to newly elected and re-elected representatives to encourage them to support higher education in the upcoming session
Contact us if you would like to get involved or have questions.
We look forward to involving you in this important advocacy work!
