Government Relations

The activities of the Government Relations committee are open to all members who wish to have a voice in the critical discussions that relate to college access and opportunity.

The issues facing our students are becoming more urgent in our troubled economy: rising college costs, reductions in aid and access for low-income and underrepresented students, diminishing options for undocumented students and discussions over testing and state and national standards.  Many of these issues are on the forefront of national debate these days and both our country and region are at a critical point in our policy-making.

Your Government Relations committee serves to keep our members informed of these key legislative issues and coordinates our efforts to impact real change.

Want to get involved?  Here’s how:

Take Action:  Periodically, the Government Relations Chair will send out “Action Alerts” encouraging the members to contact their legislators.  It is usually a very simple and painless process – especially when you use NACAC’s Legislative Action Center .

Get Involved:  We were disappointed to have to cancel our Oregon and Washington Advocacy Days due to challenges with scheduling (for the Oregon event) and low participation (for the Washington event.)   Plans are already underway for both events in 2011 as well as for some new advocacy opportunities and training.  We hope that many of our members will join us for these exciting events.  Details will be forthcoming soon.

Join our committee:  We would love to have more involvement from members in our five-state region.  We are especially looking for members from Alaska, Idaho and Montana to serve on the GR committee.  Contact Committee Chair Kristie Patterson at kpatter@linfield.edu or 503-883-2373 if you are interested.
