Posted 4/3/08, edited 4/8/08The Whitman College Office of Admission seeks a motivated, imaginative individual to join our eighteen-person admission team as an Admission Officer based in California. This is a full-time position beginning summer 2008.
Responsible for California Regional Admission Office, the candidate must be independent and able to work without direct supervision. The California Regional Admission Officer will report to the Director of Admission and be accountable for full range of admission work in one of the College’s primary market areas.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES • Develop travel schedule: customarily seven weeks in the fall and several weeks in the spring • Recruit students on the road: typical day might include four high school presentations, several prospective student interviews, and covering a college fair • Coordinate support of constituencies (alumni, current parents, current students) in assigned recruitment areas • Interview prospective students regionally in California • Follow up with prospective students by phone, e-mail, and letter • Review applications and make recommendations on admissibility of candidates • Coordinate programs as assigned by the Director of Admission: examples are Admitted Student Receptions, holiday parties, and Alumni Admission Representatives • Perform tasks as assigned by the Director of Admission
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Individuals must be able to explain and/or demonstrate that they possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
1) Must appreciate and be able to clearly articulate the value of a liberal arts education. 2) Must enjoy travel and be comfortable in and adept at working in various cities. 3) Must have a valid driver’s license. 4) Must manage time well. 5) Must exhibit critical reasoning in evaluating travel, applications, and programs. 6) Must be an excellent public speaker, and enjoy small group presentations and individual interviews. 7) Must be an excellent writer and comfortable in corresponding with prospective students. 8) Must exhibit sound judgment and strict confidentiality. 9) Must exhibit poise and sensitivity in dealing with prospective students and parents, high school counselors, and other constituencies (alumni). 10) Must have strong organizational skills. 11) Must be proficient in Microsoft Word programs, Excel, and data entry. 12) Must have a sense of humor. 13) Must be willing to work evenings and weekends. 14) Must be willing to work longer than scheduled hours. 15) Must be a team player and willing to cooperate with fellow professionals in meeting office goals.
Minimum Requirements The position requires an appreciation for a liberal arts education and a desire to travel, strong communication and time management skills, sound judgment, strict confidentiality, poise, sensitivity, and a sense of humor. An ability to learn quickly and work independently is critical, as is strong organizational skills. Computer proficiency is beneficial. A valid driver’s license is required.

Candidates selected for an interview are asked to prepare a 20 minute persuasive oral presentation on Whitman College or their undergraduate institution. |
